The Allergy Season Is Upon Me....

My allergies are killing me!
I woke up this morning, took a Claritin (preventative, I might add!), put allergy eye drops in,  hopped in the shower, and started to get ready.  Somethings blooming around here (and yeah, it was 32 degrees Saturday) and it’s kicking my butt.
First....makeup, then hair.
I was just finishing with my hair when it started.  My left eye went  crazy, watering.
Makeup, and all, melted down to my chin.
Did I say it hurt?
It hurt.
So, I wash my eye.  Now, I’m really looking good.  Like one of those before and after commercials.  One side, completely made up, the other, looking like crap.
My eye quits watering.
I start over on that eye....eye shadow, little bit of liner, little bit of mascara.  I don’t wear that much makeup, people.
I get up to get dressed, and here it all goes again.  PLUS my eye starts swelling.  I run to the sink, take it all off, and ThatManILove grabs an ice pack.
I lay down on the bed, with the ice pack over my eye.
Finally, about an hour later, I’m able to get out of the house with some semblance of being “put together.”
My eye’s still watering.  I’ve taken my second dose of allergy medicine, which, by the way, gives me a headache.
There might be something to be said for the frozen tundra and the lack of allergies thereof.

Knock, Knock, Knocking on Heaven's Door

After the Casino night, we had a busy day at the Symposium.  On less than 4 hours sleep.  Stupid, huh? Needless to say,  ThatManILove those of us who had imbibed alcohol the night before had a sinking spell around 11 a.m. - and then again, around 2:30 p.m.  Those of us who didn’t drink (namely me) somehow carried on without cratering at all.
The social hour finished around 6 p.m., and we were trying to decide where to eat, and with whom.  ThatManILove and I went up to the room to change.  He ended up laying down for a minute, and he immediately went to sleep.  My co-workers were going to make a plan, and call us shortly.  After 20 minutes passed, and no call had been received, I decided to put on jeans and boots and head back down and see if I could get all my fish to swim the same way.
Turned out, about 25 of us wanted to go with each other...and someone decided they were going to eat...(can you guess?) at the Casino.  I knew a few of my customers were not going to want to drive that far, so I made other plans.  While I called the Bonefish Grill to make reservations for 10, I had one of my coworkers call ThatManILove to tell him to come on down.  We couldn’t get him to answer.
My friends Lonnie and Dawn decided to go up to their room to change, while I was still on the phone with Bonefish Grill and trying to keep all my people together.  I quickly gave Dawn my room key, and asked her to go by our room and tell ThatManILove to come down.
He came down forthwith, and looked at me with one of those looks of love - you know, girls, the dark ominous ones?  That portend no good will?
Yeah.  ThatManILove didn’t answer his phone, but he did try to answer the door when Dawn knocked.  Just as she was coming in the room, to wake him up he was heading to the door - not quite dressed.  I’m not sure who was more surprised, ThatManILove or Dawn!
I heard lots of “Janie told me to” (from Dawn) and “Janie, I can’t believe you did that” (from ThatManILove).   We laughed a lot heading to the Bonefish Grill!
It’s never boring around here!

Come Dance With Me, My Darling!

I promised to post some of the funny stuff that happened while we were in Oklahoma, so here goes.

One night last week in Tulsa, we decided to go to the Hard Rock Casino for a couple of hours.  A friend, Doug, was in town, so we picked him up at his hotel.  We all made promises to each other we’d only stay for a couple of hours.  I already said that, didn’t I?  Yeah.  Doug doesn’t even like to gamble, and just went to spend time with us.

We don’t gamble often, nor do we stake big bucks.  I don’t play table games.  ThatManILove doesn’t play slots.  So, we’re often apart once we’re in the casino.

Doug would go hang out with ThatManILove, then he’d come play some quarter slots with me.

I quickly got tired, and so did Doug.  We agreed we’d go rescue ThatManILove and go back to our respective hotels, so to the tables we went.  We quickly found ThatManILove, so started watching.

The blackjack dealer won’t let a bystander hang around long, and ThatManILove was on a mini-roll.  I turned to the quarter machines right behind the table, so that once Doug talked him into leaving, I’d be right there and we could jet.

Doug comes over to my machine, and we play together for a couple of minutes.  Then, Doug says, “I’m gonna go get some of his drink.”

Fade back about five years.  We’re in Las Vegas, with friends.  Serious gambling friends, the kind that know what they’re doing and do it well. We are but mere amateurs.  It’s been a long night, I’m major bucks ahead, so I tell ThatManILove I’m going to bed.  He’s not been doing well, all night - our friends have been teasing him that he must be confused -  the ATM machine is NOT a slot machine.

I go to bed, and several hours later, ThatManILove wakes me up.  He’s a little under the weather, and figured out that the waitress kept topping off their bloody marys without permission.  At that point, he decides he’s never going to drink and gamble.

Back to Doug.  I said, “ThatManILove doesn’t drink when he's gambling!”  Doug said, “Okay.  Yeah.  I’ll be back.” And back he comes, with ThatManILove’s drink.  He said, “We’re sharing.”  I said, “Ooookkkaaaayyyy.”  We laugh.  I’m ready to go, but Doug keeps telling me ThatManILove is on a roll, we can't go yet.  There’s lots of activity at the table, laughing, whooping, so I acquiesce.

And then Doug says, “I didn’t know ThatManYouLove smokes.”  I say, “He doesn’t!”  Doug grins, and says, “Really?  Look!”

Sure enough, ThatManILove is dangling a lit cigarette from his fingers.  Curses. Foiled again.

Finally, we leave.  I’m driving, as it’s obvious that once again, that waitress, who must have migrated from Vegas to Oklahoma, has been surreptitiously topping off ThatManILove’s drink.

We get to the Renaissance, which is a square shaped hotel, with one bank of elevators for each floor.  We go up to the Club floor, to get water for our room.  We get back to the elevator bank, which opens up to a big waiting area.  We’re waiting for our elevator, and ThatManILove is talking, talking, talking.  I’m trying to keep him quiet for the other sleeping guests, which only leads to a lot of giggling and laughing between us. It's a futile effort, keeping quiet.

We are facing each other, as I listen to him.  I take a step back, and he takes a step towards me, still talking.  I decide to give it a test. I take another couple of steps back, and he matches me, step for step.  It’s like we’re perfectly matched...we could have been on Dancing With The Stars.  I back some more,  and he follows me all across the waiting room, until we’ve completed a perfect figure eight, around the circular seating bench, finalizing our little impromptu dance in the elevator.

We get to our room before I crack up laughing and explained to him what he’d done.

He loved it, and has laughed about it ever since!

I love this man - this man who doesn’t ever drink when he gambles, and who certainly would never smoke in a casino!

Welcome to yet another chapter of Mi Vida Loca!

Think I Should Run For Governor of Oklahoma?

We’ve been in Oklahoma for the last two weeks. Yes, Two. Weeks. One week, both ThatManILove and I were in a directional drilling school. (Yikes. The brain strain I suffered!)  The next week, I had a national board meeting and we attended a technical drilling symposium.

Needless to say, both events were peppered with customers, friends, good fun and lots of hilarious incidents...but I’m glad to be home.

Over the next week, I’m going to try to grab some of those funny things and put them down on paper for you all.  Mi vida loca, huh?

I finally got to meet Georgie of Decisionally Challenged!  We had a quick lunch at Pei Wei in Tulsa.  What a sweetheart, and she’s so flipping funny!  Can’t wait to see Georgie again, and meet her family. And maybe play "Seven Degrees From Georgie".

On The Oilfield Road Again!

Here we go again.

ThatManILove has received a work assignment in the Bakken Shale in North Dakota. (Why doesn't my industry drill wells in Hawaii?)

So, Thanksgiving morning will find us flying to Denver to spend a couple of days together before he flies up to the beautiful land of North Dakota for his first gig. And it could become sort of his home away from home, like Pennsylvania did last year. One thing's good - he has his cold weather clothes from Pennsylvania. I think it snows in North Dakota!

We’re staying at the Magnolia Hotel Denver . The good thing about booking a hotel on Thanksgiving? They’re having a special! We’re staying in their top room for around $150 per night, and it’s a boutique hotel.

I LOVE it when we find deals like that. I'll post pix, I promise!

I’ll be back home Sunday night - a friend is keeping our dogs and housesitting - and all is well with my world.

Except it’s 10:30 p.m. and I’ve not packed a thing. And our flight is at 7:30 a.m.

Such is mi vida loca!

Happy Thanksgiving, y’all!

And...happy trails, until we meet again!

My iPhone Needs A Little Charge...

I just flew into Houston.

Walked past all those iPhone/iPod vending machines without a second thought.
Arrived at my hotel room, and unpacked. Clothing, makeup, etc. for tomorrow - check.

Computer, charger - check.

iPod - Two. Two? Yup. Mine. AND ThatManILove's. He's gonna kill me. Oh, maybe not. Earphones - Three. Sets. Again, mine, TMIL's, and an extra he bought me because I liked the color of the earphones. Cord to hook iPod up to radio in room? One. Except, the radio has no iPod hookup. People! What are you thinking??? iPod plug in jack - One. Cord to plug in to iPod and electrical outlet?

None. Nada. Zip. Zilch.

Charge remaining on iPhone? About 1/8.

Lord - You turned water into wine. You parted the seas. Would you keep my iPhone charged until I can grab another cord in the morning?

'Til then, I respectfully remain...

I May Live After All

I'm feeling much better today, thanks for your prayers!

I HAD to go into the office today. I touched nothing, infected no-one, and barely saw anyone. I went straight into my office (in my sweats, no less! What a way to impress the people at your new job!), shut the door, and hopped on a 4 hour conference call. I'm the secretary on the board of the National American Association of Drilling Engineers; though I couldn't be there in person, I was there via conference call to take notes, etc. I couldn't talk, so was on IM with a coworker (in OKC) who would talk for me. All in the spirit of teamwork, people, teamwork!!! But because I was sick, I missed this annual event, which is hosted by the National AADE. Waaaah. I mean, who doesn't love Cajun cooking, of wild game and fish? (no store-bought meat for these guys!)

Oh, well. After the conference call, I came straight home and went right to sleep. This stuff is knocking me out!

I think I can see the light...at the end of the tunnel...

Shots From Pennsylvania (Yes, Tami, I Was This Close!!!)

Covered Bridge Road near New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. (I was so close to Tami of Pennsylvania Wild Woman but we were unsuccessful in meeting! Oh, well, I'll be back!)
The Elephant and Castle Pub at Grove City, Pennsylvania...and a subsequent bar shot.
Jerry, a fly fisherman from Clarion, PA, showing his cast, on the Neshannock River. I just started taking pictures, and we visited a while. He didn't seem to mind that I was taking pictures, and I promised to send them to him. For you fly fishing enthusiasts, he has a fly fishing blog named Streamside Tales!

We're heading home now, awaiting our Southwest flight at Chicago Midway. Y'all have a great day!

Ask a Question...

We have an engagement this evening, so I'm writing this post a little early (or late, depending on when you read!).

I'm going to open this one up to you...

Ask any question you want* about me** (keep them relatively clean, please) and I'll answer it. I promise. So have fun!

For now, I'm going to dry my hair, get dressed, and we're hitting the streets of Cranberry, PA!

* excluding contest question

**added later because Bare-Eyed Sun asked "what numerical expression using only three instances of the numeral "4" yields "55"? and immediately made me a liar...'coz that's one I can't answer...immediately, anyway!

Baby Can I Sleep A Little Longer

Know what will mess you up when you’re traveling?

The alarm clock on the side of the bed. I’ve been here all week, and every morning, the clock in the hotel has matched my iPhone time.

I set my iPhone alarm for 5:30 a.m. We have a 7:15 a.m. breakfast date, then have to drive through traffic for a 9:15 appointment some 30 minutes away. And we’re checking out this morning.

My alarm just went off...it’s 5:30 a.m. I hop up, hit the snooze, and glance at the hotel clock beside my bed.

It says 4:30 a.m.

Uh-oh. Did time change last night? (My iPhone automatically updates wherever I am.)

Thinking Daylight Savings Time must have changed last night, I pop on the computer, and type “What Time Is It?”It says 5:30 a.m., CST.

Guess I’d better get up, and trust my iPhone instead of the hotel clock. Time will tell which one’s right and which one’s wrong...but if I'm wrong at least I'll be early to my appointments!

Scott's Job Description...or, We May Be Blood Kin

The other day, I mentioned a meeting with a Sr. VP who told me to "write my own job description". My brother, Scott, got a kick out of that, and wrote one for me, as I detailed here on my post.

Finally, after a blogging hiatus, Scott's back. And that "write your own job description" uncorked a river in him...and he wrote his own job description.

I sometimes forget how alike we are...but when I read his self-authored job description, it so fits me. You know we gotta be kin!

Go here, and read Scott's real self-authored job description. You'll enjoy it!

PS - Scott...I shot 81/100 today! Come and get me!

Answers to My Last Post - or, I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends

We just got in from putting on a scholarship golf tourney, and we are way tired.

I knew, though, I had to be a woman of my word, and post tonight. 365 posts, right? That's what I promised.

So, tonight, I give you comments from last night's post, where I discussed how one of the companies that's after me offered me the rarity of writing my own job description. There are several great encouraging comments, but the ones that really cracked me up tonight are from my brother Scott, and Braja from India.

To preface this, one of my work peers is Trey. Trey was instrumental in getting me hired at my present company, and I've been very honest and open with him about all this. I had posted a little PS in last night's post, for Trey's benefit. Here's how it all went down.

I wrote the PS: Trey, I know you read this. Don't freak out. I'm just debriefing.

Brother Scott said: So write it! Write your own perfect job description with your perfect salary! Then double it and present it! If they say yes, now you have a decision to make. Before that , it is just another journalism assignment. Love ya.

Then, he got a little more creative, which so I loved!

$1 million a month, for the first 6 months. Lamborghini company vehicle. 2 4-hour work days a week--no more or salary doubles for that month. No cell phone or email! They come to you and bow--if you grace them with your time and knowledge - you get % of the ticket. Your husband and brother get jobs at 1/2 of your pay with all benefits and insurance. The company must be renamed after you! You set the price of intermediate West Texas Crude by whatever mood you are in for that day! If you are blue ---Price is $70 but if you are happy - Price is $85. I don't know what it would take to get it to $100.

And then, in chimes Braja...from India...

Trey, cover your ears (she wrote):

Jeez, Janie, look into it!!!

OK Trey, it's safe to look now.

In the end, the big noises and huge promises fall flat...go with the substance...

I love you all - you all keep me sane, and on point, and on the right road. Thanks for all your comments...and for making me smile and laugh!

Decisions Decisions Decisions

As you know if you’re a regular reader, I’ve accepted a job, and started last week. This job will be sweet. All is going well and I’m starting to settle in. All of the guys I work with are great, and excited about me joining the company. I've had nothing but 100% support.

I had multiple offers, and as such, I had to formally turn those down. Each and every one of them. One company is still after me, and I met with their Senior VP today. I went in with every intention of telling them I’m done, and to leave me alone.

Hearing the VP's vision for the company has me thinking, though. I think I’m supposed to stay where I am at this major service company. But dang, when a Senior VP of a major public company tells you to write your own job description, and it will be a high profile position...do you know how inviting that is to a country gal like me?

Why do I do this to myself?? Arrrrrrrrrgh.

PS - Trey, I know you read this. Don't freak. I'm just debriefing.

Back To Work...and then, to Santa Fe!

After much thought and discussion with ThatManILove, I have accepted an offer and will rejoin Life In The Oilpatch Monday morning. I’m going to work for a major service company, and I’m excited about it. Let the madness begin!

I’m sure ThatManILove is excited, as well, to have this crazy drama come to an end. My time off has been relaxing, and to be honest, we sincerely considered the idea of my "retirement", as it were. But really, can you imagine? ThatManILove swears I would drive everyone crazy if I retired...but I was really getting into my photography, and enjoying working with the WonderDogs. It’s almost hunting season, and we were getting busy! That will still happen, but I’ll be back to the “weekend warrior” mode of hunting.

The offers I received were amazing, and I still can’t believe that in this day and time that companies came forth the way they did in order to add me to their team. What a blessing! Making this choice was one of the hardest things I’ve done in a while - but we are excited about it! And...the weekend will find us in Santa Fe, on a work related boondoggle - so we're starting off with a bang!

Have a blessed Monday!

Voluntary Involuntary Hair Cut

Though I’ve not yet accepted any offers, one that is very attractive to me comes from a major company. The kind of company where you have to have a background check, fill out all sorts of pre-hire paperwork, and take a drug test within a certain time frame from receiving “the e-mail” from the HR department.

Over the past 2 days, I’ve been taking a minute here and there to fill out said forms. This morning, I went to the designated testing place to take the drug test. Said drug test consisted of a urine analysis, and a hair test. No problema, right?

I be-bopped in there, announced myself, and we got down to business. Sign a bunch of paperwork? Check. Give out all your life history and all your identifying numerals? Check. Urinalysis? Check. Hair test? Well, here’s how it went down.

Tester: Okay, Janie, we need you to sit in this nice fluffy chair here. And since I’m new, my supervisor is going to watch me cut your hair. You’re my first hair test!

Janie: (in a squeakly little voice) Okaaaaaaay.

Tester: Now, I don’t know if you knew this, but we have to take 120 strands of your hair, from the scalp down. It will just be little chunks.

Janie: What? Dude. My hair is so fine, it shows scissor marks. I was in Pennsylvania last week, my bangs were so long, I borrowed scissors and chipped them out. And then, I couldn’t sleep because I just know my hair stylist is going to jump me out because I cut my hair myself. But CHUNKS of my hair, 60 strands thick, at once? I might as well buy my casket!!!

Tester: Well, thank God you have hair. We could take it from your private parts.

Janie: Oh. Yeah. Ummmmm...well, okay. I guess my noggin will do.

Supervisor: Lift up the top layer of her hair.

Janie: Oh, wait, let me do it, please. Can I pick where the bald spots are going to be?

Supervisor: It’s not going to show, that bad. And if we don't get enough hair, they'll call you back in and we'll have to do it all over again.

Janie: (nervous) Oh, right.

Tester: Lift your hair up, Janie, let’s get this deal done.

And Tester begins to twist my hair into chunks. I could hear all 60 cuts of the first batch. Had to be a super dull pair of scissors.

Supervisor: That’s good, Tester. Now let’s grab the other bunch.

Janie: Ummm....could I please see a mirror?

Supervisor: You won’t even be able to tell, I promise.

Janie: I can’t see it, but I can feel the stubby little ends where you cut my hair!

Tester: Okay, let’s do the other side. (And he does.)

I take a picture of the clump, and send it to my potential employer plus a couple of his managers in an e-mail. Here’s how that e-mail traffic went down.

Me: The things I do for you...120 strands. You owe me a haircut, whether or not I take this job.

El Patron: I’ll cut your hair! You may look more like Joe and Bob, though! (Both are balding.)

Joe: I’d be in trouble if they needed 120 strands.

Bob: Janie, if they don’t use all of the strands, can you get the leftovers? Maybe Joe and I can start a hair restoration program.

Me: Sure. I’ll need to draw up a royalty agreement to my benefit.

Bob: Just bill it to El Patron.

They crack me up. Lord only knows what they think of me.

I came home, ran some errands, and later, freshened up my hair to go out. About 50 more strands came out with the comb. I may never comb my hair again, because I don't think I can stand the loss.

Welcome to Mi Vida Loca.

Community of Bloggerly Love

It’s been a week since I posted. The week has blown by.

When I was laid off, though I had some warning of the possibility, I was in shock. And then I guess I went through maybe a period of anger. I’m a producer - a rainmaker; to think that I would ever make anyone’s RIF list was devastating to me.

I don’t yet have a job, but companies have started contacting me and negotiations are beginning. That’s exciting, and I’m so blessed. It seems that in this market, none of the jobs possibilities have come through recruiters...they have come through connections. None are posted on a job board, and it seems that a couple have even been custom fit for me. Is that crazy? Nah. That, my friends, would be God.

By my side remains ThatManILove. And from him, and other people who speak into our lives, came wisdom.

“We need to be quiet,” he said. After consulting with our friends, we decided on a period of two weeks. And then he said, “We need to get out of here for a bit.” And as you know, we did such. And it was the very best thing.

The talk concerning my layoff was rampant within my industry. The fact that I got laid off actually scared some of my peers - if it could happen to me, it could happen to them. I pray that is not the case. Anyway, I kept away from industry events, fundraisers, etc., in order to stay quiet.

While we were gone to Ruidoso, ThatManILove said, “Don’t be surprised if it takes 3-4 weeks for the right opportunity to rise up around us - let’s just wait and see.” He is so wise. Because that is exactly what is happening.

And you all - you have been so supporting. E-mailing and calling me, checking up on me, being faithful to comment, making me laugh and letting me cry. Also, you've reminded me that this is no big deal and that there are certainly worse things that this storm! I'm blessed with and without a "job", and that I am NOT a "job". Thank you so much - you continue to be my friends throughout.

I will not forget.

Give Me Trees and Mountains - And Cooler Weather!

Since i’ve whiled away two days by posting entertaining pictures of my dogs and their friends, I thought I’d catch you all up.

Today, a week after my job was eliminated, I finally sent out my last e-mail responding to all the others I’ve received from friends and customers concerning my job situation. Though I wouldn't dream of skipping the process, it is kind of a dying to self process. I'm embracing that. I’ve also been busy taking care of details that happen to you when you leave your place of employ:

  • checking on my flexible spending account and trying to resolve the balance
  • checking on cobra insurance and what to do next
  • checking to see what to do with my 401K

Tonight, I received letters of recommendation from both of my local VP’s. And I cried.

I can’t believe I’m not working with the people in my local office anymore - i miss them. We all got along really well, and respected each other. Surely after all this passes, we’ll be able to get together for lunch, etc. The friendships won’t end, if they're real.

My salesmen and saleslady friends are all checking up on me, and it seems I’m the topic of conversation all over the oilpatch. With that being said, there’s a lot of conjecture going on, and I heard last night that I’ve already taken a new job. This isn’t true. What did Tom Cruise say in that movie? "Show me the money!" Well, if you follow me at all, you’ll know I have a saying for that: “If they’re talking about me, they’re giving someone else a break!”

So...we’re definitely heading to the mountains, and we’ll be gone at least a week. We’re going to escape all the noise, grab the dogs, and drive to the vacation rental ThatManILove secured tonight. It’s beautiful, on a mountaintop, and it was just built in 2008. Granite countertops, deck surrounding the house, I can’t wait!

Upon our return, I’ll definitely start looking for my next new gig. Until then, God bless you all for your constant support. I’ll never forget you, my blogging family!
