On The Oilfield Road Again!
Here we go again.
ThatManILove has received a work assignment in the Bakken Shale in North Dakota. (Why doesn't my industry drill wells in Hawaii?)
So, Thanksgiving morning will find us flying to Denver to spend a couple of days together before he flies up to the beautiful land of North Dakota for his first gig. And it could become sort of his home away from home, like Pennsylvania did last year. One thing's good - he has his cold weather clothes from Pennsylvania. I think it snows in North Dakota!
We’re staying at the Magnolia Hotel Denver . The good thing about booking a hotel on Thanksgiving? They’re having a special! We’re staying in their top room for around $150 per night, and it’s a boutique hotel.
I LOVE it when we find deals like that. I'll post pix, I promise!
I’ll be back home Sunday night - a friend is keeping our dogs and housesitting - and all is well with my world.
Except it’s 10:30 p.m. and I’ve not packed a thing. And our flight is at 7:30 a.m.
Such is mi vida loca!
Happy Thanksgiving, y’all!
And...happy trails, until we meet again!

Zanna's Growing Up
Zanna at three months:
It has happened.
A first in our marriage. I guess we’d been holding our breaths, hoping against hope that it wouldn’t happen to us. Dreamweavers, that’s us! Really, we were delusional.
It has happened, full out, all the way, happened.
When we came home from Memphis, Zanna jumped up on our bed as we were unpacking. I don’t even know what made me look, but I did.
Janie: Oh, no!
ThatManILove: What?
Janie: I think Zanna’s in heat, this time, for real.
ThatManILove: What makes you think that?
Janie: Ummmm, look.
ThatManILove: Oh, yeah, she definitely is in heat. Our baby’s not a baby any more!
Zanna is 15 months old. By rights, she could have been in heat one or two times now, but she’s not been. There have been times I’ve wondered, but I was always wrong. (Well, I’ve not had a female dog in a long time!)
PetSmart has all these cool things now for dogs in heat...diapers. Pads. Cute little ruffly panties.
I had a set ready, just in case this thing ever came to pass. Not that I wanted it to, but, logic says, ya know? And mommies have to be prepared for that special day.
I got ready to go to work.
Janie: Here’s everything, honey, we’re going to have to diaper her. Please help me.
ThatManILove: It won’t be that bad. It will only last 2-3 days.
Janie, smiling: That’s not what I read. Again, here’s everything, honey, we’re going to have to diaper her, now.
Zanna handled the diapering pretty well, and since, has grown accustomed to all her new “finery.”
ThatManILove, however, is having a problem with all of it. You see, he’s home from the field this week, and as such, has most of the doggie duty while I’m working. Zanna has become really huggy, which is cool, but when TMIL has something to do, she won’t get out of his way and has to be in the middle of everything he’s doing. And she’s also very smart, and can strip those little doggie panties off in a New York minute, velcro and all.
She has to be under supervision at all times.
We attended a party tonight, came home, let the dogs in. We got Zanna dressed, and went into our room. The dogs followed. I was putting up some clothes, and realized Zanna was no longer around. I turned and looked out our bedroom door, and saw she was on the living room couch, walking up and down.
We ran into the living room. Zanna had (1) taken off her panties and diaper, (2) walked through all the laundry TMIL had folded, thus unfolding it, and (3) had torn her panties to shreds. All in about 10 minutes times.
TMIL was furious. I was laughing. At 15 months, Zanna still has a lot of puppy behavior in her. Clothes can be washed again, it’s no big deal. And for some unknown reason, I had purchased an extra pair of doggie panties last night.
Thank God.
Now, how long will this stuff last? Because if it’s not over soon, I may have to take vacation and give TMIL a break. He may be experiencing PMS himself.

Now This Is Lake Living, People!!!
Enjoy the pix of sunset at Lake Granbury! Wednesday morning, we found another lakehouse to rent (that's it in the picture), and headed out to Lake Granbury to settle in. The house was beautiful. Light, airy, open architecture. Beautiful yard, beautiful dock, on a pretty part of the lake.
We rented a boat, and went fishing, it was fun. Midnight fishing with ThatManILove, too much fun! I caught 3 fish...just call me Billie Dancette. And yes, for you PETA peepsl, I let those little fishies live - right back into the water they went. (I'm practicing for my own TV Fishing Show.) The night was redemptive after the prior Tuesday night fiasco!
For those who just have to know..yes, we went back to House #1 for my Maui Jim sunglasses. They are now in my possession.
All is well in my world. And consider this post 2 out of 365. I'm challenging myself again, this time I'm going for a year of posting daily. Don't you know that will rock your worlds? Guaranteed to be "content-free" (a term I copped from my friend Eric Siegmund of the Fire Ant Gazette.)

Lake House Exorcism
We snuck off this week to spend some alone time at Lake Granbury. Rented a nice lakehouse, boat, the works. I’m so spoiled. I know. So shoot me.
But first, the REAL haircut. We drove into Mansfield about midnight, then had a leisurely breakfast with Mike and Pam. Pam and I then went to VuJen Hair Studio for me to face my fate with Robyn and Rebecca, hair artistes extraordinaire. They’re both regular readers of this blog, so the new do a la drug test wasn’t a surprise. My blog couldn’t prepare the girls for the WAY the drug testers wrecked my hair, though! Rebecca said it’s going to take some doing to work with those layers when they grow out, and I think Robyn just flat gave up on the highlight part.
Later that afternoon, we went to supper, then traveled on to Granbury. Dropped by Kroger’s and picked up about $250 worth of perishables. (This will be important later.) By now, it’s dark. We were so stupid to try and find a lakehouse in the dark! We put the address in the GPS, to no avail. “Address doesn’t exist in this town.” You gotta love it.
Finally, we find the place. Gated property, looks inviting. We drive down the driveway and get out of the truck, flashlight in hand.
We cannot find the front door. By this time, ThatManILove is exhausted, he’s been sick, and he’s more than just a little done. We see a ramp, and go up it. There’s a door there, but no lockbox. We go downstairs, same thing. Finally, we find the lockbox...but by now, we’ve forgotten the lockbox number. I trudge back to the truck, find the paper, read the number by the interior light of the truck, and call it out to ThatManILove...who can’t hear me, because the wind is blowing.
We finally get into the place. We walk into the living room with the beautiful rock fireplace, just like was shown in the pictures....except for the bed in the kitchen, which is also in the living room. ThatManILove looks at me like, “What have you done, girl?” (Thank God he looked at the pictures, too, before we closed the deal.) Whoever took the pictures for the ad is either a cropping expert or one who knows how to work the heck out of Photoshop!
We’re both trying to talk ourselves into making this work when we realize there is no way from the 1st floor to the 2nd floor. We have to go outside to gain access to the 2nd floor. I can’t make this stuff up.
And then, I see a door. I open said door. Inside said door is...(wait for it!)...an old elevator. Complete with pillows and blanket. I kid you not. We work and we work, and we can’t get the elevator to run. Finally, we walk back up the upstairs ramp (outside the house, remember) and go up to the second floor. We get the second floor unlocked, and try the elevator from the top down. No go. We look around to see if this house is even a doable deal, since by now, it’s 9:30 p.m. There are probably 10 beds on the 2nd floor, complete with a black bathtub/shower. Scary, that.
None of this stuff was ever even mentioned in the ad - and the ad certainly never mentioned an elevator! That had been converted to a very small bedroom.
Needless to say, we immediately tried to call the realtor, to no avail. I sent an e-mail, we locked everything back up, and we get ready to leave. At this point, we realize that the lights on the second floor porch are blinking like they're participating in an exorcism. We go back in, try to find the way to turn them off, to no avail. We give up.
ThatManILove looked at me, and said, “We need to jet this deal and not worry about it tonight. Let’s holler Calf Rope and leave. I’m calling Mike and Pam to see if we can stay with them.”
So, he does, and they graciously say, “C’mon!” Thus begins another 45 minute drive. We’re trucking down the highway towards Mansfield about 20 minutes later, and somehow, I have my first post-elevator/bedroom shock cognizant brain thought.
“Honey, what did you do with that 30 lbs of ice?” (that’s now been melting for an hour plus...)
“Oh, Lordy, Janie, pull over! It’s sitting on top of everything in the back of the truck.”
We contributed to the ground water level of Johnson County, hit Mike and Pam’s house around 10:45 p.m., unloaded all our groceries into their refrigerators, and crashed.
It’s never boring around here!
PS - Did I tell you that the next day, I realized I left my favorite pair of MauiJim sunglasses on the table right next to the bed that was right next to the stove that was right next to the elevator/second bedroom that was in the kitchen/living room in the house we refused to sleep in? Oh, yeah, baby.
Oh, yeah.

Community of Bloggerly Love
It’s been a week since I posted. The week has blown by.
When I was laid off, though I had some warning of the possibility, I was in shock. And then I guess I went through maybe a period of anger. I’m a producer - a rainmaker; to think that I would ever make anyone’s RIF list was devastating to me.
I don’t yet have a job, but companies have started contacting me and negotiations are beginning. That’s exciting, and I’m so blessed. It seems that in this market, none of the jobs possibilities have come through recruiters...they have come through connections. None are posted on a job board, and it seems that a couple have even been custom fit for me. Is that crazy? Nah. That, my friends, would be God.
By my side remains ThatManILove. And from him, and other people who speak into our lives, came wisdom.
“We need to be quiet,” he said. After consulting with our friends, we decided on a period of two weeks. And then he said, “We need to get out of here for a bit.” And as you know, we did such. And it was the very best thing.
The talk concerning my layoff was rampant within my industry. The fact that I got laid off actually scared some of my peers - if it could happen to me, it could happen to them. I pray that is not the case. Anyway, I kept away from industry events, fundraisers, etc., in order to stay quiet.
While we were gone to Ruidoso, ThatManILove said, “Don’t be surprised if it takes 3-4 weeks for the right opportunity to rise up around us - let’s just wait and see.” He is so wise. Because that is exactly what is happening.
And you all - you have been so supporting. E-mailing and calling me, checking up on me, being faithful to comment, making me laugh and letting me cry. Also, you've reminded me that this is no big deal and that there are certainly worse things that this storm! I'm blessed with and without a "job", and that I am NOT a "job". Thank you so much - you continue to be my friends throughout.
I will not forget.

Give Me Trees and Mountains - And Cooler Weather!
Since i’ve whiled away two days by posting entertaining pictures of my dogs and their friends, I thought I’d catch you all up.
Today, a week after my job was eliminated, I finally sent out my last e-mail responding to all the others I’ve received from friends and customers concerning my job situation. Though I wouldn't dream of skipping the process, it is kind of a dying to self process. I'm embracing that. I’ve also been busy taking care of details that happen to you when you leave your place of employ:
- checking on my flexible spending account and trying to resolve the balance
- checking on cobra insurance and what to do next
- checking to see what to do with my 401K
Tonight, I received letters of recommendation from both of my local VP’s. And I cried.
I can’t believe I’m not working with the people in my local office anymore - i miss them. We all got along really well, and respected each other. Surely after all this passes, we’ll be able to get together for lunch, etc. The friendships won’t end, if they're real.
My salesmen and saleslady friends are all checking up on me, and it seems I’m the topic of conversation all over the oilpatch. With that being said, there’s a lot of conjecture going on, and I heard last night that I’ve already taken a new job. This isn’t true. What did Tom Cruise say in that movie? "Show me the money!" Well, if you follow me at all, you’ll know I have a saying for that: “If they’re talking about me, they’re giving someone else a break!”
So...we’re definitely heading to the mountains, and we’ll be gone at least a week. We’re going to escape all the noise, grab the dogs, and drive to the vacation rental ThatManILove secured tonight. It’s beautiful, on a mountaintop, and it was just built in 2008. Granite countertops, deck surrounding the house, I can’t wait!
Upon our return, I’ll definitely start looking for my next new gig. Until then, God bless you all for your constant support. I’ll never forget you, my blogging family!

More Than Just A Statistic
Okay. No more suspense.
My job was “eliminated” yesterday.
I am now a statistic. Female. Executive. Over 50. Unemployed.
I’ve been a statistic before, just not “unemployed”.
I’ve been married. Divorced. Single mom. Single working mom. All those things.
But never, ever, unemployed.
And certainly not in a recession, much less a bust in the oilpatch.
I knew it was coming, my boss let it slip that I was “on the list” two weeks ago. ThatManILove and I cut a traveling trip short, came home to Midland, went straight to my office and cleaned that sucker out. (I didn’t think I could stand the pressure of someone standing over me while I boxed up my office.) My boss told me many things yesterday. Affirming I was their top producer in 2008, affirming how I conducted my business throughout the almost 2 years I’d been there. But here’s the kicker - I need affirmation, and keeping my job, in some weird way, was one of the places I somehow got that affirmation. So, I needed to know “why”. I’ll probably never know the real reasons. My boss did tell me one thing - he said if he’d known the company was ever going to go down this road, he wouldn’t have brought me into the company at all.
I’m a rainmaker. I make rain. And I made a huge amount of rain for this company. The Lord seeds the clouds, and those clouds rain relationships, and I watch over those like a hawk. I nurture them like the best mom. And I win - because a huge part of those relationships become friends, and family friends at that. For those relationships, I am so very thankful.
My employer let me keep my phone, and gave me all day to do what I needed to do. I wanted to get out of there right away, but I took the time to send out bulk mails to all my customers and clients, letting them know I was leaving and giving them my new contact information.
In retrospect, I could have done that from the house. Immediately, my my work e-mail flooded. And I felt like I needed to answer all that I could, though I forwarded some to my home e-mail for later response. The voice mail on my phone filled up 3 times - before I could get it emptied, the messages recorded on paper for later attention, it would fill up again. This morning, when I awoke, the voice mail was once again full. I still have a magnum of phone calls to return.
And in the midst of all the storm, this is where things went right. People were calling to check on me all day long, and today as well. I have never felt so loved.
Now, my bloggy friends, you’re going to get to walk this road with me. My emotions are running the gamut, but I promise to keep the rants down to a certain decibel. Already, some hilarious things have happened. Welcome to Mi Vida Loca.
